Fond du Lac County Highway Department tries to get invasive weeds under control

You may have recently seen the Fond du Lac County Highway Department along the roadside spraying some ditch lines in the county. This work is maintenance to deal with invasive plant species along the County Highway System.

Some of these invasive plants are said to be noxious and could pose a health risk to highway workers, utility workers, emergency responders, and anyone using the roadways.

Over the next few months, crews that have been trained and certified in applying EPA certified herbicides will be spraying these areas. The herbicides are plant specific and won’t hurt native plants like grasses, milkweed, and other plants that benefit wildlife and pollinators.

Spraying these areas will help to control and eradicate Wild Parsnip and other harmful invasive weed species.

The department says it’s plans are to spray all of the County Roads east of Interstate 41 this spring and summer as well as some of the Parks Departments Walking Trails. No Town Roads will be sprayed by FDL County.

Organic growers or the public with questions about the spraying are encouraged to contact the county’s highway office with questions at 920-929-3490 Monday through Thursday.
