Fond du Lac Public Library announces November programs

The Fond du Lac Public Library has announced four programs they will be holding in November.

Discover what you can create in FDLPL’s Idea Studio during November

Want to try a different piece of equipment in the Fond du Lac Public Library’s Idea Studio? Join any of the Badge & Make sessions planned for November to get trained while creating something fun to take home.

Badge & Make events fill up fast, so visit calendar.fdlpl.org two weeks before each event when registration opens. Upcoming events include:

Wednesday, Nov. 6 at 6 p.m.: Teens will be trained on how to use the sublimation equipment. Then, they can design a mug to sublimate and bring home for free. This class is strictly for youth ages 13 to 18.

Monday, Nov. 18 at 6 p.m.: Participants will learn how to use the Idea Studio’s Janome sewing machine and make a pot holder to bring home.

Tuesday, Nov. 26 at 5:30 p.m.: Get badged on our Glowforge Laser Pro and engrave a small design onto a wooden ornament. Must be 18+ to participate.

The public also is invited to join the November meeting of the Cut & Paste Club at 6 p.m. Stop down to the Idea Studio to decorate tunnel books using cut out images from books and magazines to be glued into a precut book. Register at calendar.fdlpl.org.

Most programs are open to anyone but youth under the age of 13 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian (unless otherwise noted). Other badging opportunities also exist for Idea Studio equipment; check calendar.fdlpl.org for times and availability.

The Idea Studio is open for walk-in visits Monday through Thursday from 3 to 8 p.m., Friday from 3 to 6 p.m., and Saturday from noon to 4 p.m.

Fond du Lac Artists’ Association will hold Membership Show at Langdon Divers Gallery

The Fond du Lac Area Artists’ Association will hold its annual Membership Show Wednesday, Nov. 6 through Tuesday, Dec. 3 at the Langdon Divers Community Gallery in the Fond du Lac Public Library.

The association’s Artist of the Year is painter Michele Wiesen. Other members of the organization include Bruce Bagley, Jayne Borst, Judy Braker, Kirk Dille, Jeanne Gilbert, Sue Hoehnen, Karen Hoying, Karla A. Masters, Roxine McQuitty, Maureen Mezera, Vivian Mulholland, Jake Schommer, Sherrill Swan-Edmunds, Nancy Swenson, Sandra Schaetzel Uecker, Renee Waters, Mary Wehner, and Chuck Wydeven.

An artist reception also is planned for Thursday, Nov. 14 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in the Langdon Divers Gallery.

The association was founded in 1968 and is currently in its 57th year. They are the group responsible for the formation of Art on the Island, which takes place every first Sunday in June at Lakeside Park. Next year, it will be held on June 1, 2025, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

This is the 14th-annual member exhibit at the Langdon Divers Community Gallery by the Fond du Lac Artists’ Association.

The Langdon Divers Community Gallery is open seven days a week, whenever the Fond du Lac Public Library is open at 32 Sheboygan St. The gallery may be found off the atrium at the south entrance to the Main Library.

Learn about the past and how to preserve the present during November at the Fond du Lac Public Library

Love history? Visit the Fond du Lac Public Library during November to learn about collecting oral histories, preserving historic family records, and ongoing research by the state historical society and the Ho-Chunk Nation into historic dugout canoes.

First, on Tuesday, Nov. 5 at 6 p.m. in the McLane Room, learn about the upcoming “Our Fond du Lac” oral history program planned by the Fond du Lac Public Library. This informational session will introduce Our Fond du Lac, and guests will learn about the project goals, themes, and ways that they can participate. No registration necessary to participate.

On Thursday, Nov. 14 at 6 p.m., join Bill Quackenbush, Cultural Resources Division Manager for the Ho-Chunk Nation of Wisconsin, as he presents Wisconsin’s Dugout Canoe Conundrum. The presentation focuses on the recent discoveries of two dugout canoes and how the recovery of these coincided with a recent canoe build the Ho-Chunk People had completed. The ongoing collaborative inter-agency work now taking place places a spotlight on the extensive research and collaboration being conducted between the Wisconsin Historical Society and the various tribes of Wisconsin.

No registration necessary. The presentation will be held in the McLane Room, or watch it live on Facebook @FDLPL. History at Home is held monthly, covering topics of local and regional interest.

Then, on Thursday, Nov. 21 at 6 p.m. in the McLane Room, participate in Preservation 101. Learn about preserving your new and historic family records for generations to come including best practices for the storage and handling of your materials including documents, newspapers, photos, and more. No registration required.

Dive into a new (or favorite) hobby during November at the Fond du Lac Public Library

Discover a new hobby or find time for an old favorite this month at the Fond du Lac Public Library. From tickling your funny bone to knitting with friends, find it all at the library during November.

On Monday, Nov. 4 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in h McLane Room, local expert Trevor Clementi will lead a Beginner’s Improv Workshop, introducing the basic skills for folks of any level. Registration is required at calendar.fdlpl.org.

Then, on Saturday, Nov. 9 from 10 a.m. to noon in the McLane Room, see who can put a puzzle together fastest during the Fall Puzzle Tournament. Teams of two to four members will get the same 500-piece puzzle, and the first to assemble it will win a prize. For ages 13+; register at calendar.fdlpl.org.

Planning a holiday gathering? Join the library’s Snack Board Demonstration program on Tuesday, Nov. 12 at 6 p.m. in the McLane Room to learn to assemble an easy, attractive, and appetizing snack boar. Register at calendar.fdlp.org.

Bring your latest project to Yarn It All on Thursday, Nov. 14 at 9:30 a.m. in the Community Room. Work on your project and chat with other yarn crafters; no registration necessary.

Fall into a great program in the Children’s Room at the Fond du Lac Public Library

Days are getting shorter but the Fond du Lac Public Library continues to have plenty of fun and educational sessions throughout November.

Among those activities will be the library’s third and final event in a series of Fall Reading Workshops for parents and caregivers focused on the theme of preparing young children for future success in school through literacy.

On Wednesday, Nov. 20, visit the Discovery Room at 1 p.m. for “Playing with Purpose.” Play is a primary skill for developing childhood literacy. Learn more about this as library staff cover all ages of young childhood development and receive take-homes. No registration required.

Getting ready for the holidays? Participate in the annual Wrapping Paper Drive from Nov. 20 through Dec. 31. Bring your extra, unwanted rolls (or even half rolls) to the library and drop them off in a box located outside the Children’s Room. Need something new? Pick up a roll for free. Wrapping paper will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.

· Wednesday, Nov. 6 at 1:30 p.m. in the Discovery Room: Drop in to Homeschool Meet-up to connect with other homeschooled students and get to know library resources better.

· Tuesday, Nov. 12 at 6 p.m. in the McLane Room: Drop into the latest meeting of the FDLPL Rook Club. Chess players of all ages and abilities are invited for friendly gameplay; experienced players are encouraged to assist newer players.

· Wednesday, Nov. 13 at 4:30 p.m. in the Discovery Room: Visit Crafty Kids to make adorable pine cone owls. No registration required.

· Monday, Nov. 18 at 4:30 p.m. in the Discovery Room: Join Maker Mondays to make a robot that looks like a bug. No registration required.

· Friday, Nov. 29 at 11 a.m. & 2 p.m.: Youth ages 5-12 will learn to paint a Cheery Racoon during Paint-Along. Register now at calendar.fdlpl.org.

Teens, meanwhile, have plenty planned as well:

· Monday, Nov. 11 through Sunday, Nov. 17: Register for a Browser’s Cache bag, complete with a checked-out book and more, that can be picked up later in the month. Theme: All About Food.

· Tuesday, Nov. 5 at 4:30 p.m. in the Discovery Room: Drop into Anime Afternoon to see a few episodes of anime and enjoy a few snacks. Cosplay is welcome. No registration required.

· Thursday, Nov. 7 at 4:30 p.m. in the Teen Space at the library: Want to try out Magic the Gathering but don’t know where to start? Join this Mischief & Magic beginner class to learn the basics and try out some pre-made decks. No registration required.

· Tuesday, Nov. 19 at 4:30 p.m. in the Discovery Room: Drop into Play with Your Food this month to learn all about tea. No registration required.

· Thursday, Nov. 21 at 4:30 p.m. in the Teen Space: Get ready for a tabletop roleplaying adventure during Ready, Set, Roleplay. Bring your own Level 1 character or use one provided. All experience levels are welcome. For grades 6-12. No registration required.
