Fond du Lac Sheriff’s Deputies Respond To Tactical Situation Near Campbellsport

Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to an address just south of Campbellsport Friday night, June 23, 2023, after getting a report of a man that shot himself.

At approximately 8:42 PM the Fond du Lac County Communications Center received a 911 call from a man at N1299 County Highway W, who said he had shot himself in the stomach and was going to shoot himself again.

This was reported to have occurred at a multifamily apartment complex and around the same time as the original caller called, a second call came from the complex with a person saying they heard a gunshot come from somewhere in the building.

When deputies arrived on scene and set up a perimeter around the building, they could see lights turn on and off and observed movement inside the man’s apartment.
At this time the Fond du Lac County S.W.A.T team and the crisis negotiator team were called out to the scene and deputies evacuated the non-involved residents from the apartment building.

Deputies made contact with the man and negotiations were started to get the man to surrender peacefully.

The man reported to negotiators that he had shot himself in the stomach with a .22 caliber gun and that he was intoxicated.

After extended negotiations, the caller became more cooperative and ended up putting his gun down and peacefully surrendering to law enforcement. However, when deputies went to treat the man for his wounds he explained that he didn’t actually shoot himself and had no signs of any injuries from a gunshot but was heavily intoxicated.

The man was evaluated for possible injuries by Campbellsport Ambulance and ultimately transported to St. Agnes Hospital for further treatment.

Multiple criminal charges related to the incident will be forthcoming when the investigation is complete.

The Wisconsin State Patrol assisted at the scene by closing down Highway W while deputies worked the incident. Also, due to the possible extent of the injuries, Campbellsport Ambulance had requested Flight For Life Medical Helicopter respond to the scene.
