Habitat Still Taking Volunteers on New Home Build
Volunteers and contractors working with Habitat for Humanity of Fond du Lac County are getting closer to finishing construction of another home. The build is going up along Second Street to support a local family in need.
Executive Director Katie Karls says “there are still volunteer opportunities for the build and also in our ReStore. There’s definitely something for everyone. There’s painting, sweeping, picking up nails, caulking – all kinds of great things to do.”
The house may be a gift to the family, but Karls says that doesn’t mean it’s completely free. She tells us “they have to show us that they have the financial means and know how to
do their bills and prioritize and make sure that they’re going to pay this
house on time. Because it pays forward,
these houses pay forward to the next homeowner. So there’s a lot of sweat
equity involved.”
Karls expects the home to be finished and officially dedicated in just a few months. She says there is “lots of progress happening. We had a few setbacks with the weather and
some contractors were a little bit behind, but we just do the best we can and
make it go and it’s going to be a great house for this family. And we still
plan on doing our home dedication October 13th.”
