Heavy rains diverted from wastewater to storm sewer pipes to keep wastewater treatment facility from being overloaded

If you’ve driven on Park Avenue in the last few days, you’ve seen some equipment set up in the middle of the road surrounded by cones.

This equipment was put in place to help the city divert excess amounts of rain water that came with heavy rains last week.

The Fond du Lac Department of Public Works recently released a statement saying due to the heavy rains on April 14 – 15, 2026, the city diverted wastewater into nearby storm sewer pipes at six locations. These flows then discharge into nearby creeks, rivers and storm ponds.

They say while this wastewater is untreated, it is so heavily diluted that it doesn’t pose a threat to public health. The bypassing occurred between 3:00 am on 4/14 and 11:00 pm on 4/15.

The city says the Wisconsin DNR was also notified of the water being diverted.
