Icy roads cause multiple area crashes including a double fatal crash near New Holstein

Rain quickly turned to snow Wednesday, March 5, 2025, when a strong cold front swept over the area. The drop in temperatures also changed any standing water on area roadways to ice which caused problems for area commuters.

In Fond du Lac County, a three vehicle crash hampered traffic in the southbound lanes of I-41 just south of Hickory Road around 4:45 PM. No serious injuries were reported but the crash blocked one of the lanes for about 20 minutes while crews worked the scene.

In Winnebago County, around 3:30 PM, a school bus full of children slid off the road into the ditch on County Road N near Old Knapp Road, just south of the EAA campgrounds. No children were reported injured, and a second bus was called to transfer the kids to finish their trip home.

Also in Winnebago County around 3 PM, A semi jackknifed on State Highway 26 near Cottonwood Avenue. No injuries were reported but damage occurred to one of the trucks fuel tanks, resulting in about 50 gallons of diesel fuel spilling. Town of Nekimi Fire Department and Oshkosh Hazardous Materials crews came to the scene for that.

And the worst crash in the area occurred in Calumet County at 6:20 PM. Two vehicles collided on State Highway 57/32 near Shady Lane Drive, north of New Holstein.
According to the Calumet County Sheriff’s Office, a southbound pickup truck and northbound SUV collided head on. The 73-year-old male driver of the pickup and his 70-year-old female passenger, both from the rural New Holstein area died as a result of the crash while the 57-year-old female driver from Chilton was transported to an area hospital in critical condition. That crash remains under investigation.
