Improperly disposed of ash blamed for garage fire

At 2:09 a.m. on June 14, 2026, Fond du Lac Fire/Rescue was dispatched to 155 Old Pioneer Rd. for a reported structure fire. Upon arrival, crews found smoke and active flames coming from the attached garage of the residence.

Fire personnel immediately initiated fire suppression and search-and-rescue operations. First-arriving companies quickly brought the fire under control, confining the damage to the garage area. Two occupants were home at the time of the incident; they discovered the fire and called 911.

Crews completed overhaul operations and confirmed the fire had not extended beyond the area of origin. The fire was controlled within 15 minutes, and no other structures were affected. One occupant from the adjoining unit was transported to St. Agnes Hospital as a precaution. No firefighter injuries were reported.

Smoke detectors were present and functioning. Fond du Lac Fire/Rescue reminds all residents to routinely test smoke alarms and replace batteries as needed. Working smoke alarms should be installed on every level of a home and inside all bedrooms.

Fire investigators determined the cause of the fire to be improperly discarded ashes from a campfire the previous evening that had been placed into a trash can. The Fond du Lac Police Department assisted with scene safety and traffic control.
