Incidents cause travel problems on Interstate 41 north and south of Fond du Lac Wednesday
Commuters using Highway 41 in Washington County needed to find a different route Wednesday, December 27, 2023 as the interstate between the highway 45 split and highway 60 was closed for several hours due to an incident. According to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, they had units on the way to a distraught person threatening to jump off the Sherman Road bridge that goes over 41. Before units arrived, the person jumped landing in front of a semi that struck the person, killing them.
Arriving units qickly closed the highway around 7:45 AM and the northbound side of the highway remained closed until shortly after 1 PM.
Parts of 41 southbound in Winnebago County near Oshkosh had to be shut down Wednesday night after a vehicle crashed on the Highway 21 bridge over 41 and then fell down landing on the interstate, and was then struck by another vehicle. The crash happened around 6:30 PM and responding units said the driver was pinned in the vehicle but was alert and talking. Members of the Oshkosh Fire Department used the jaws of life tools to extricate the driver. The vehicle was removed from the highway around
8 PM but a couple lanes remined closed due to a light pole that was knocked down on the bridge in the crash and was hanging over the interstate. Its unknown what caused the crash or if the driver suffered any injuries.
