Marian University Women’s Volleyball Wins Opener
Marian University women’s volleyball (5-3, 1-0 NACC) made quick work of Alverno in their NACC opener defeating the Inferno 25-17, 25-16, and 25-23.
The Marian offense continued their hot stretch of late recording 45 kills with a .231 hitting percentage in the sweep. The Sabres also were able to record at least 13 kills in all three sets. The two sides opened evenly with Marian holding a 10-9 lead before using a 9-4 stretch to jump ahead to a comfy 19-13 advantage and take the set.
The second set was the best set on the evening for the Marian offense recording 16 kills to just three errors for a .325 attack percentage. A fast start saw the Sabres extend a 9-3 lead out to a 21-9 advantage. Marian clinched the sweep after taking an 18-12 lead with a 10-5 run in a third set that saw another 16 Marian kills.
Sophomore Kaitlyn Merrill continued her dominance of late recording a match-best 16 kills off of a .282 attack percentage to go with a pair of aces. Junior Andrea Miller nearly had a double-double recording eight kills with 12 digs, while senior Brooklyn Taylor paced the back row with 25 digs.
Marian travels to the Millikin Invite opening against Monmouth (Ill.) and Illinois College Friday, Sept. 17.
Marian University Women’s Soccer Takes Conference Opener
Marian University women’s soccer (1-3-1, 1-0-0 NACC) opened conference play with a 4-1 victory over Wisconsin Lutheran.
The Sabres were able to find the back of the net first when senior Shannon Coughlin scored her first goal of the season with an assist from junior Ashley Welk at the 28:45 mark of the first half. This proved to be the only tally in a half that saw the Warriors outshoot the Sabres 10-7.
Wisconsin Lutheran was able to find their equalizer just 6:22 into the second half, but the tie didn’t last long as the Sabres retook the lead in the 60th minute. Senior Meghan Batzner was the goal scorer for Marian after heading in a corner kick from Welk. Just 4:20 later, sophomore Trinity Grimes scored her first collegiate goal with yet another assist to Welk. Another sophomore scored their first collegiate goal when Maya Galicia found the back of the net in the 85th minute.
Each team had eight shots in the second half with WLC taking an 18-15 edge for the game. The Sabres had 10 different student-athletes record a shot led by Coughlin who had three shots. Junior Amy Birner (1-2-1) faced 10 shots making nine saves to earn her first win of the season in goal.
Marian remains on the road traveling to Rockford for a noon NACC match Saturday, Sept. 18.
Marian University Men’s Soccer Opens Conference Play With Loss
Wisconsin Lutheran scored a pair of goals in the second half to defeat Marian University men’s soccer (3-3-0, 0-1-0 NACC) 3-1 to open NACC play.
The scoring happened quick to open the first NACC match for both squads with WLC converting a penalty kick just 5:34 for the first goal. Freshman Drew Cowden then turned a failed clear attempt into his first goal of the season scoring just 4:20 later from 17 yards out inside the near post.
The remainder of the half was quiet on the scoring front, however, as Marian went into the half with an 11-5 edge in shots.
The second half started just how the end of the first half did before a funny bounce on a chip into the box from WLC gave the Warriors a 2-1 lead with 17 minutes remaining. Then just 1:23 later Wisconsin Lutheran was able to score on a corner kick to set the final at 3-1.
Marian finished the game with a 24-13 edge in shots led by Cowden who had six shots. Senior Kevin Cervantes (3-2-0) made one save in 82:52 of action.
Marian travels to Rockford Saturday, Sept. 18 for a 2:30 p.m. match.
Brewers Drop Two In Detroit
The Milwaukee Brewers lost for the second time in two days, managing only 3 hits in a 4-1 loss to the Detroit Tigers. The Brewers used four pitchers, with Brandon Woodruff picking up the loss, giving up 3 runs on 4 hits, while striking out 7 in 6 innings of work. The Brewers are off Thursday, and then will look for win number 90 Friday against the Chicago Cubs.
Brewers Brent Suter Nominated For Roberto Clemente Award
Major League Baseball announced that Brent Suter was named the Brewers 2021 nominee for the Roberto Clemente Award, one of baseball’s most prestigious individual honors acknowledging community and philanthropic commitment. This is Suter’s second time receiving the honor.
TImber Rattlers Take Down The Loons
The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers got a big game from Alex Hall and from their pitching staff to defeat the Great Lakes Loons 4-2 at Dow Diamond on Wednesday night. Hall had three of Wisconsin’s five hits, had a hand in all four of their runs, and was behind the plate for three Rattlers pitchers, who recorded thirteen strikeouts.
