Licenses Can Be Applied For For Same Sex Marriages In FDL County

Fond du Lac County Clerk Lisa Freiberg says they’ve begun accepting marriage application for same sex couples. If something changes during the five day waiting period the couple would be out the $100 fee for the license. Monday State Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen filed an emergency motion asking a federal appeals court for a temporary stay in Wolf versus Walker. However federal judge Barbara Crabb refused to put a stay on her order. Freiberg says when the domestic partnership registry began five years ago there was initial interest, but then it died off. She says on the other hand a domestic partnership isn’t afforded the same benefits as a marriage. She says they couldn’t have stayed open to issue the licenses this past weekend. She says that’s because she doesn’t have the authority to extend hours or stay open weekends to issue marriage licenses.
