Local News Briefs Saturday 4/26/14

A Richfield man and woman were killed in a one-vehicle accident on State Highway 164 in the Village of Richfield early Friday morning. Washington County Sheriff’s officials say the vehicle crossed over the center line and went into a ditch, hit a culvert and went airborne. The vehicle struck a utility pole before coming to rest upside down in a ditch. The 37-year-old man was thrown form the vehicle while the 38-year-old woman was pinned inside. Both died at the scene. Investigators are determining who was driving the car and why it went off the road. They are the second and third people to die in a traffic accident in Washington County this year.

Former Reeseville Man Sentenced To Prison On Child Porn Charge

A former Reeseville man was sentenced this week to three years in prison and a year of extended supervision on a child porn possession charge. Forty-nine-year-old Paul Phillips of Ixonia was sentenced in Dodge County Court. In January of last year a search of his Reeseville home found images of underage children on his computer. He was also ordered to pay $3,500 in fines and court costs. 

Milwaukee Man Bound Over For Trial In Sheboygan County Case

The 42-year-old Milwaukee man who led Sheboygan County authorities on a high speed chase on I-43 last week was recently bound over for trial. A Jeffrey Bridges waived a preliminary hearing and pled not guilty to several charges.  Bridges led officers on a chase at speeds of up to 115 miles per hour which ended when he hit spike strips in Manitowoc County which took out his tires.  Deputies were attempting to stop him after reports he had been involved in retail theft at the Deer Trace Home Depot. He’s being held in the Sheboygan County Jail on a $5,000 cash bond.

$350,000 Super Cash Winner In Oshkosh

State lottery officials say a $350,000 Super Cash ticket was sold in Oshkosh for Thursday night’s drawing. It was sold at the Blue Moose Stores at 208 Bowen Street matching all six winning numbers. Thursday’s winning Super Cash numbers were 01, 14, 18, 26, 28 and 37. Winners have 180 days from the date of the drawing to claim their prizes at a state lottery office in Madison or Milwaukee or by mail.

Expanding On Heroin Summit

Fond du Lac Assistant Police Chief Steve Klein says the recent Heroin Summit held in Fond du Lac was a great educational piece to battle that particular drug problem in the community. He says Police Chief Bill Lamb is continuing discussion on ways to expand on that initiative. He says the heroin problem in the community has really taken off. He says heroin use is becoming more common place. He says recent state legislation especially a law that allows first responders to use Narcan to revive people who suffer heroin overdoses will save lives.

Party Patrols Start This Weekend

Law enforcement agencies will begin their crackdown on underage drinkers and social hosting this weekend. St. Marys Springs Academy has its prom today. There are eight other proms in the next two weekends. Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Captain Rick Olig says graduations are coming up too, but a lot feature chaperoned after parties and casino games where no alcohol is served. The “Party Patrols” run through Saturday, May 10th.

No Safety Net For Leibham In Congressional Race

Unlike State Senator Glenn Grothman fellow Congressional candidate State Senator Joe Leibham doesn’t have a job to fall back on if he loses the August primary. Grothman’s seat in the State Senate doesn’t come up this fall, but Leibham’s does. Leibham says he was willing to give up that seat to run for the 6th Congressional District seat, but he believes he’s doing the right thing. Leibham, Grothman and State Assemblyman Duey Stroebel are all running as Republican candidates for the seat Congressman Tom Petri is retiring from.

Petri Town Hall Meeting In FDL Today

Congressman Tom Petri will hold his final town meeting in series of twelve meetings in Fond du Lac today. With his recent announcement that he wouldn’t be seeking re-election after 35 years in Congress it’s almost taken on a farewell tour type atmosphere. He says it’s given him a chance to get reacquainted with some people he hasn’t seen in a while. He says it’s been kind of fun for him.

The meeting will be at the Fond du Lac Public Library from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. in the Eugene McLane Meeting Room.
