Markesan Woman Charged With Retail Theft
A 53-year-old Markesan woman was recently charged with misdemeanor theft for shoplifting groceries from the Ripon Pick ‘N Save. According to the criminal complaint Rhonda Dennison was detained by employees of the store last September when she was seen pushing a cart of groceries out the doors of the store. Items were also found in her purse. The value of items recovered was more than $380. Dennison will make an initial appearance in Fond du Lac County Court on Tuesday, July 2nd.
City Of FDL Gets Grant For Recycling Bins
A grant fro the Keep America Beautiful and the Coca-Cola Foundation has allowed the City of Fond du Lac to purchase 25 recycling bins and place them in Lakeside Park. Fond du Lac Parks & Forestry Superintendent John Kiefer says the park attracts ten of thousands or residents and guests throughout the year. He says the bins will help them with the thousands of beverage and food containers used at festivals and events that can be reclaimed for recycling. The City was one of 156 local government, schools, colleges and other community groups nation-wide to receive a grant.
Gudex Historic Preservation Tax Credit Included In State Budget
State Senator Rick Gudex says he’s happy his efforts to increase the tax credits for historic preservations were approved by the state legislature, but isn’t pleased with how that was accomplished. It was included in the state budget and the increase he was seeking from a 5 percent to a 20 percent tax credit was reduced to 10 percent. He says a lot of people came forward to tell him how much they could have accomplished if that measure had been approved a year ago with the 20 percent tax credit. Gudex says he will continue to work towards having the amount of tax credit for historic preservation efforts increased to 20 percent.
First Dead Bird From West Nile Virus Found In Washington County
The state has its first reported case of a dead bird with West Nile virus this year. State health officials say the dead crow was found in Washington County. It tested positive for the mosquito-borne illness. West Nile virus can infect birds, horses and humans. Last year in the state 57 people had the virus, nine more than the previous high in 2002 of 48. Four people died of the West Nile virus in Wisconsin last year, and 32 birds and a horse.
Improvements At Winnebago Correctional Among State Building Projects
The State’s Building Commission this week approved several key projects across the state. Among those projects is maintenance and repair at Department of Corrections’ facilities in Milwaukee, Racine, Winnebago, and Waushara Counties. Facility improvements will also be made at Devil’s Lake State Park, Governor Thompson State Park, Harrington Beach State Park, Poynette Game Farm, and the Sandhill Wildlife Area. State Representatives Joan Ballweg of Markesan and Gordon Hintz of Oshkosh are among the Commission’s members.
Trooper Newman Moving On
A regular guest on News-Talk 1450 KFIZ over the past three years a state trooper is moving on after receiving a promotion. Trooper Luke Newman is now Sergeant Newman. He says he will be working out of Outagamie County. He says his job responsibilities will be changing, gut he will be spending less time on the road. He says he was a bit overwhelmed when he first became a trooper so he’s sure he will make the adjustment. He says what will make the transition easier is that he’s already pretty familiar with the people he will be working with.
Breakfast On The Farm
Fond du Lac County’s Breakfast on the Farm is this Sunday at the 3-Day Dairy in Malone. About 4,000 people are expected to attend the breakfast between 8 a.m. and Noon at the Diederichs Families Farm located at N8148 Schaefer Road near Mount Calvary. Tickets will be available at the farm.
