Loose pig killed by police angers Door County residents

Animal activists and lovers in Door County are angry with how a deputy of the Door County Sheriff’s Office handled finding a pig that has been on the loose in the area.

The incident started Friday when reports started coming in of a large pig that was roaming the southern portion of the county. The Door County Sheriff’s Office’s made a post on their Facebook page asking for the public’s help in locating the owner of a pig and also asking motorists to use caution when traveling in the area. They also stated that they had been trying to capture the pig but were unsuccessful.

Around 6:40 PM Friday, a deputy located the pig near State Highway 42. A member of the group Saving Snouts, who had also been trying to locate the loose pig, started video taping the encounter of the officer and the pig, thinking the officer was going to use a tranquilizer on the pig to capture it. Instead, the person videotaped the officer approaching the pig and killing it with his gun which the department stated was done due to the dangers the pig posed to motorists on the highway.

The Kaukauna based non Profit group posted on their facebook page that “a heartless human stole this beautiful day Jewel should be experiencing today.”

The Door County Sheriff’s Office Facebook page has received dozens of angry posts about the incident from the public. The sheriff’s office stated they would be reviewing reports from deputies and eyewitnesses, as well as body camera footage, and provide an update once they had gathered the information.
