Madison High School Gets New Name

James Madison Memorial High School is getting a new name.

The Madison school board voted Monday night to re-name the school for Vel Phillips, who was Wisconsin’s first Black statewide elected official. Students objected to honoring President James Madison because he owned slaves. The name change will take effect at the start of the next school year.
