Man taken into custody after SWAT standoff in City of Fond du Lac

Several agencies worked together overnight to bring a potentially volatile incident to a safe end on the City of Fond du Lac’s northeast side.

Around 12:20 AM the Fond du Lac County Communications Center received a 911 call from a woman who stated her child’s father was drunk and assaulted the child and that there were other children in the apartment building at the Lakeside Garden Apartment complex in the 600 block of east Scott Street.

The child in question had run out of the apartment and had last stated the father had fallen and possibly injured his face. With this information, the City of Fond du Lac Police deployed a heavy response and after verbal threats were made by the suspect through a closed door aimed at law enforcement if the door was opened, they requested the assistance from the Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office, Wisconsin State Patrol, and City of Fond du Lac Fire/Rescue. At one point, KFIZ news Director Doug Raflik counted over 20 vehicles at the incident command post in the UW Oshkosh Fond du Lac Campus parking lot.

After hours of preparation and attempting to negotiate with the man, the suspect opened the door and exited with one of the children and locked the door behind him. City of Fond du Lac Police SWAT and Fond du Lac Sheriff’s Office SWAT team members took the 31-year-old suspect into custody without incident at approximately 3:43 a.m. and breached the door to get to the remaining two children.

The suspect was arrested on charges of Felony Physical Abuse of a Child – Intentionally Causing Bodily Harm, Felony Bail Jumping, and Misdemeanor Bail Jumping and is held at the Fond du Lac County Jail.

The 11-year-old was taken to the hospital with serious but non life threatening injuries.
