Man who robbed bank so he could go to prison gets five years

An Appleton man who said he’d rather go to jail than be homeless will get his wish… at least for the next 5 years.
63-year-old Martin Schiedermayer was facing homelessness after losing his job, and the easiest way to go to jail in his eyes was to rob a bank. In January, he robbed a Wells Fargo in Appleton and was caught 20 minutes later with the $2000 he stole.
Thursday Schiedermayer pleaded no contest to the charge of Robbery of a Financial Institution and was given five years in prison.
The judge ordered that he undergo a mental health evaluation once released on extended supervision.
