March comes in like a lamb… but don’t let your guard down to winter just yet

March comes in like a lamb today as sunny skies and temperatures well above normal cover the area. It will be a bit breezy however this afternoon.

With today being March 1st, this marks the start of Meteorological Spring. To keep things easier to manage, the meteorological seasons start at the beginning of months, and last three months each. Spring officially starts this month on the 19th.

March is a big transition month with average high temperatures ranging from 33 on the first to 47 on the last day. Its also a month known for very dynamic storm systems. To show the range March can have temperature wise… the record high and low for the month in Fond du Lac is separated by 107 degrees. The highest temperature of 83 degrees occurred on March 29th of 1910 and the lowest temperature of -24 degrees happened on March 1st of 1962. That day also holds the coldest high daily temperature of the month where it only made it up to -1 degrees.

And don’t let the word Spring fool you. There can still be big snow storms. On March 10th of 1943 over a foot of snow fell in Fond du Lac and the month of March, 1923 had 32 inches of snow falling in it.
