Marian University’s Dr. George E. Koonce Inducted into Prestigious Fraternity

Dr. George E. Koonce, Senior Vice President for University Relations and a former Green Bay Packer, has been inducted as an honorary member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity. The induction took place during the fraternity’s 2025 International Conclave in Tampa, Florida, from July 18th to 20th.

Founded at Howard University in Washington, D.C. in 1914, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, was established to exemplify the ideals of Brotherhood, Scholarship, and Service. Throughout its history, the fraternity has counted among its ranks a number of notable members, including scientist George Washington Carver; civil rights icon Congressman John Lewis; actors Blair Underwood, Ben Vereen, and Terrence Howard; television personality Al Roker; and football standouts Jerry Rice and Emmitt Smith. This prestigious honor recognizes Dr. Koonce’s distinguished career and his lifelong commitment to community engagement and leadership.

Following his induction, Dr. Koonce will join the fraternity’s Bigger Better Business committee, where he will serve as Senior Advisor to Phi Beta Sigma International Director, Charles Jones. This committee is dedicated to supporting and promoting minority-owned businesses and economic development initiatives.

Prior to his role at Marian University, Dr. Koonce had a successful career as a linebacker for the Green Bay Packers, including a Super Bowl XXXI victory. After his playing career, he earned a Ph.D. and has held numerous leadership positions in higher education and professional sports, including Director of Athletics at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and Director of Player Development for the Green Bay Packers.

Marian University was founded in 1936 by the Congregation of Sisters of St. Agnes, a group of pioneering sisters, in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin.
