Milk Specialties Evacuated – HAZ MAT Crews Called After Nitric Acid Leaks From Hose

The Fond du Lac Fire Rescue Department responded to Milk Specialties around 7:12 this morning for what was called in as an alarm.

Upon arrival, crews could see the building was being evacuated and a yellow gas plume was seen coming from the loading dock area. The Fond du Lac Fire Rescue Hazardous Materials Team was quickly dispatched to the scene.

The initial cause of the incident appears to be a failure in the hose from a chemical truck off-loading Nitric Acid to the building, which sprayed the acid onto 55 gallon drums of a surfactant and animal by-product which resulted in a violent reaction that created the plume.

The building was ventilated and the chemicals were neutralized. Haz Mat crews were on scene for approximately 5 hours.

There were no injuries as a result of the incident.

Hickory Street was closed between Grove and Western Ave for the duration of the incident.
