More hot weather on the way

A stretch of hot and moderately humid weather is settling into east-central Wisconsin today, marking the beginning of the area’s second significant heat wave in the last three weeks.

High temperatures in the Fond du Lac area are expected to climb into the 90s through Saturday, with afternoon heat index values forecast to approach or exceed the upper 90s at times, making outdoor activities more strenuous and increasing the risk of heat-related illnesses.

The heat is developing because of a large dome of high pressure building over the central United States. As air sinks beneath the high-pressure system, it compresses and warms while also suppressing cloud development and rainfall. With abundant sunshine and persistent southerly winds transporting warm, moisture-rich air into Wisconsin, temperatures continue to build day after day.

While Fond du Lac is expected to experience uncomfortable heat, the most dangerous conditions are forecast farther north and west. The National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory for portions of northern Wisconsin, while an Extreme Heat Warning remains in effect across parts of northwest Wisconsin and much of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metro area. Those areas could see temperatures in the middle to upper 90s, with heat index values topping 100 degrees and very warm overnight temperatures providing little relief.

Criteria for a heat advisory is heat indices at 100 degrees or higher, and with dewpoints for now staying in the low 60s, our area falls just short of advisory conditions, however the National Weather Service says a heat advisory could be issued for the area Tuesday. KFIZ will keep you posted should any heat headlines be issued.

Residents are encouraged to stay hydrated, limit strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest part of the afternoon, wear lightweight clothing, and check on neighbors and relatives who may be more vulnerable to the heat.
