Numbers in for first quarter of sturgeon spearing season

Wednesday, February 12, 2025, starts the 5th of 16 days of the sturgeon spearing season.

So far 408 sturgeon have been speared. 218 on Lake Winnebago and 190 on the upriver lakes of Poygan, Winneconne and Butte des Morts.

Monday and Tuesday’s combined totals were 118 fish. Broken down, totaled 15 juvenal females, 38 adult females and 65 males. Monday and Tuesday netted seven fish over 100 pounds bringing the season total to 21.

After the first four days of the season, caps are only about 10% reached.

The DNR says for a third day in a row, the Pipe registration station will be closed. This is due to especially poor water clarity in that area and not many sturgeon being speared there. If you do spear a sturgeon in that area, you are asked to bring it to the Quinney station to get it registered.

Sturgeon season goes until February 23rd, or until one of the caps are met.
