Betty Ziewacz Scannell

Betty Ziewacz Scannell died March 9, 2025, 2 months short of her 96th birthday. She was born May 17, 1929 to Lyrena and Gilbert Larsen in Waupaca, Wisconsin. Betty served the Village of North Fond du Lac, Wisconsin for more than thirty years, starting as the deputy clerk-treasurer in 1963; then as Clerk Treasurer, and, from 1982 to 1993 as the elected President. While Village President, she was elected to the Wisconsin League of Municipalities Board of Directors, serving as Board President in 1991. In 1979, she started her work as a real estate agent in the Fond du Lac area in addition to serving on several Fond du Lac County Board committees. She ran for the Wisconsin State Senate in 1992. Betty enjoyed many years of playing golf, bridge and socializing with her dear friends.

Betty married Edward Ziewacz June 5, 1948, in Waupaca, Wisconsin. They had four children Ellen (John Jagodzinski); Peggy (Michael Coyne); Judy Ziewacz (Frederick Merrill); and Thomas (Ida) Ziewacz.

On December 27, 2003, Betty married Leo Scannell and gained two stepdaughters Judy (Joseph “Bud”) Michels; and Connie Kalupy.

In 2015, she moved to Oakwood Village, Prairie Ridge in Madison, Wisconsin

She is survived by her daughters, daughter-in-law and step daughter; four grandchildren: Charles (Brenda) Dunham; Kristine (Korey) Scholtze; Thomas (Jo) Coyne; Kathleen (Casey) Ftorek; step grandchildren — Alex and Tim (Rochelle)Merrill; Trevor Scholtze; Colleen (Craig) Marusich, Erin Garcia, Jodie (Tad) Winkler, Jacquie (Jim) Wendt, Julie (Jim “Benny”) Benesh, and Jill (Joel) Wendt, as well as numerous great grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husbands Edward and Leo; son, Thomas Edward Ziewacz; stepdaughter Connie Kalupy; and sons-in-law, Ron Dunham and Frederick Merrill and her three siblings and their spouses Doris (Everett) Johnson; Harriet (Edward)Petersen; and Gordon (Cleo) Larsen).

The family would like to thank the staff at Oakwood Prairie Village and Agrace Hospice who provided care to Betty.

Visitation will be on Monday, March 17, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 11:45 AM at Zacherl Funeral Home, 875 E Division St, in Fond du Lac. A Liturgy of the Word will follow at 12:00 PM. Entombment will take place at Calvary Cemetery Mausoleum.
