Curtis Law
Curtis Law passed away Sunday, February 11, 2024, at Edenbrook Nursing Facility, Fond du Lac, WI where he had been a resident since 2016. Born in New London, Wisconsin, to Hal and Beryl (Buelow) Law on December 11, 1928, he was 95.
His childhood was marked by the untimely death of his father, Hal, from injuries sustained in a fall. His mother went to Appleton to work as a domestic helper entrusting his care to Hal’s mother, who continued to live near the family farm, and then later, to his dear cousin Tommy, in New London. After graduating from New London High School, he enlisted and served in the United States Navy, from 1946 – 1949. He then enrolled in an accounting school in Fond du Lac, which shut down its operations before he could finish his studies. It was at this difficult time that he fell in love with Delores Retzleff, a waitress at Milt’s Diner, who made “the best chocolate malt”. They “eloped” on October 9, 1951, and the first of five children was born the following April. Curt and Delores were generous toward their younger siblings and to Beryl, his mother, offering them a place to stay in their home on Sixth Street during transition periods in their lives.
Curtis worked at Sears Roebuck & Company, first making deliveries, and then trained as an appliance service technician. He retired from Sears in 1987 after 35 years of service. After retirement, he was employed by Kondex until 1996. He was a member of the Church of Peace, United Church of Christ, and served on the church council for many years.
He was a kind and humble man, who loved his children unconditionally and was accepting of differences and of things he could not change. He believed in never saying an unkind word. He was devoted to his family and could be counted on to attend the sporting events and performances of his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. There were many games of horse at the basketball hoop and practice baseball 500 sessions. He also loved to barbecue for everyone when they visited. He even started bicycling when he retired and would do trips on the Fond du Lac trails. His Yorkshire terrier, Tiffany, was his favorite pet. He would have Tiffany ride on his lap when he mowed the lawn. He and Delores made adventurous family trips to Hawaii, Jamaica, Japan, London, Florida, Alaska, and Montana.
Surviving Curtis are his children Gerald (Darrell) Greene of New York, Eileen (Paul) Rottscholl of Fond du Lac, Kenneth (Steph Tress) Law of Ripon, Laura (Jon Shamp) Law of Idaho, Debra (Delbert) Weigel of Omro; six grandchildren – Jamie Law Mielke, Christopher Law, Benjamin Law, Chad Law, Carolyn Law, and Amanda Law; and 9 great grandchildren. Also surviving Curtis is his brother Jack (Pat) Law of Fond du Lac, his sister-in-law Shirley Ferguson of Fond du Lac, and brother-in-law Dean Retzleff, of Madison.
He is preceded in death by his father and mother, wife Delores of 53 years, and in-laws John Ferguson, Gail and Ed Rebedew, Darlene Steffen, and Tom Retzleff.
Cremation has taken place. A service is planned at Ledgeview Memorial Park Chapel on Friday, April 19, 2024 at 10:30am with Pastor Stephen Stepp, officiating. Thank you to the staff at Edenbrook for the many years of care given to Curtis.
