Eugene “Abe” J. Smet

Eugene “Abe” J. Smet, 83, of Fond du Lac, died Saturday, April 29, 2023 at Sunny Ridge Nursing Home in Sheboygan. He was born February 12, 1940 in Fond du Lac, the son of Roland and Katherine (Schneider) Smet. He attended St. Patrick’s Grade School and graduated from Goodrich High School in 1960. Eugene served in the U.S. Army from 1963 – 1965 in Berlin, Germany. On April 23, 2022 he participated in the Honor Flight to Washington DC with his son Alan. On November 4, 1961 he married Shirley Simon at St. Louis Church in Fond du Lac and she preceded him in death. On May 17, 2003 he married Marilyn Loehr at Sons of Zebedee St. James Catholic Church in Oakfield.

Eugene worked various jobs including, Giddings & Lewis in Fond du Lac, Bordens Cheese Factory in Racine, CNH in Racine, and for Southern Wisconsin Center in Union Grove. He was a member of Landt-Theil Post 470 and St. Joseph’s Parish in Grafton. He enjoyed the Green Bay Packers, mall walking, John Wayne western shows, and loved family gatherings.

He is survived by his wife, Marilyn; two children, Alan (Elsa) Smet and Sheri (Jeffrey) Grizzel; two step sons, Jay (Vicki) Loehr and John (Kristi) Loehr; grandchildren, Jacob (Brenda), Marc, Michael, Aria, Abbie, Taylor, Diego, Jacobo, Jessica, Justine, Liam, and Alia; great grandchildren, Joziaha, Sebastian, Oliver, Luna, Charlotte, Marlee, Maverick, Emerson, and Sofia; siblings, Michael (Linda) Smet, Mary Ann Salter, Casey Smet, and Joe (Joan) Smet; sisters-in-law, Sandy Smet and Kelly Guptaitis; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Shirley; and siblings, Jim Smet, Richard Smet, Joan Marcelja, and Anthony Guptaitis.

The visitation will be held Friday, May 5, 2023 from 9:00 – 11:00 AM at Holy Family Church, 271 Fourth Street Way in Fond du Lac. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday at church. Cremation has taken place and burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery with military honors.
