Leota D. Hass

Leota D. Hass, 98, a resident of Malone, reunited with her husband, Leonard, in Heaven on
September 1, 2023, at the Hospice Home of Hope, 11 years later to the day that he died.
She was born December 23, 1924 in Mount Calvary, a daughter of the late Frank and Anna (Zager)
Lohse.
On May 25, 1946 she married Clarence “Leonard” Hass at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Fond du
Lac.
Leota was a graduate of Fond du Lac Senior High School. Leota was a member of St. John the
Baptist Catholic Church, Johnsburg, the Homemakers Society, the Christian Mother’s Society and the
Malone Heritage Museum. Leota was a homemaker and farmed with her husband and her son, Allan,
in the town of Empire and in Malone. They were also in various bowling leagues together.
Leota skillfully played the accordion using only her ear and memory for over 90 years including
periods of time with “The Melody Mixers” and “Leota and the Boys.” As a young woman, she was
offered a position playing accordion in the Ted Mack Band, but said she turned it down because she
wanted to take care of her children.
Her children remember her as a devoted wife and mother, with beautiful handwriting. Leota had
excellent driving skills (like her husband) and an ability to can and cook excellent meals.
Survivors include two daughters, Barbara Pagel of St. Peter, Connie (special friend (Rodney Mulder)
Rashid of St. Anna, three sons, Gary (Linda) Hass of Fond du Lac, Allen Hass of Malone, Melvin
(Julie) Hass of Kiel, seven grandchildren, Brenton (Shelley) Pagel and Brenda (fiancé, Keith
