Melvin Herbert Gantner

Melvin Herbert Gantner, 89.9 years old, of Fond du Lac, died Monday, May 20, 2024, surrounded by his family. He was born June 24, 1934, to Ernest and Bertha Gantner. He was baptized on July 8, 1934 and graduated from St. Paul’s Lutheran Church/School in the Town of Empire. On October 10, 1959, he married Mary (Grahl) Gantner in Eden, WI and they had 63 wonderful years together. He was an ironworker with Hennes Erecting and Azco/Hennes for over 25 years. He served our country in the Army from 1954-1956.

He was a very faithful member of Tabor Methodist Church where he taught adult Sunday school, served on committees, and helped guide building projects. Melvin enjoyed playing baseball, horseshoes, playing cards, bowling, fishing, camping, hunting, and loved “The Northwoods” with his 24-hour campfires! Tinkering on projects was a favorite pastime and nothing like a good “vintage sale” or auction. His quips and funny responses sure made everyone smile and laugh. He loved his family very much and enjoyed watching the grandkids grow and have fun.

Melvin is survived by four children, Lance (Nancy) Gantner, Jay (Lisa) Gantner, Jill (Todd) Scheberl, and Craig Gantner; six grandchildren, Gavin, Bret (Randi), Shelby (special friend, Brandon), Bo, Laina (Zach), and Bree (Derek); 11 great-grandchildren, Colin, Owen, Karson, Ashton, Brinley, Bradee, Jaelyn, Celia, Cameron, Eli, and Cooper; his sibling, Dick (Caren) Gantner; and in-laws, Carol Salter, Bill (Karen) Grahl, and Gary (Janice) Grahl; nieces, nephews and many other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Mary Gantner; sister, Lucille Kemnitz; and brothers-in-law, Louie Kemnitz and Jack Salter.

The visitation will be held Wednesday, May 29, 2024 from 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM at Uecker-Witt Funeral Home, 524 North Park Avenue, Fond du Lac, WI. The memorial service will follow at 4:00 PM with Pastor Jess Graham officiating.

The family extends a special heartfelt thank you to Stephanie Tavs NP, The Adalaide Place and Preceptor Hospice for all of their support.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in Melvin’s name can be made to St. Jude or by planting a tree.

He says in parting, “Stay safe and have fun!”
