Rev. Henry Juroff

Tuesday morning it pleased Almighty God to take unto Himself the soul of Rev. Henry Juroff through the redemptive work of our Lord Jesus Christ at the age of 88 years.

Henry was born on March 5, 1924, in Benton Harbor, Michigan, the first child of Henry and Olga Kunst Juroff.  They named him Andrew Juroff, yet, like his father, everyone called him “Henry”.

He spent his early years on the farm of his maternal grandparents, where his grandmother had a very positive influence on Henry Jr.   It was through her influence that the family found a church home at Grace Lutheran in Eau Claire, Michigan, where Henry was confirmed in the Christian faith in July, 1939.  He began his training in the ministry after graduating from Eau Claire High School in 1942, at Northwestern College in Watertown, Wisconsin.  After graduation in June, 1947, he went on to study at Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary in Thiensville, Wisconsin.  In his second year, he volunteered to serve among the Apaches in Arizona, spending a year teaching and preaching, and even cooking for the children.

Graduating in 1951 from the seminary, he was assigned his first parishes, St. Paul’s Lutheran of Mound City and Peace Lutheran in Gale, South Dakota.  He married his sweetheart, Rosemary Martin on November 3, 1950, in Niles, Michigan, who assisted him in his ministry until her death in 2005.  Pastor Henry’s parish ministry also included St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran, Battle Creek, Michigan (1953-1958), St. John’s Lutheran, Florence, Wisconsin, St. Paul’s Lutheran, Tipler, Wisconsin, and Mount Olive Lutheran, Iron Mountain, Michigan (1958-1962), St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Howards Grove, Wisconsin (1962-1989).  He also taught history and general science for a year at Manitowoc Lutheran High School.

An avid gardener and fisherman all his life, Henry was known to throw a line into Lake Michigan between hospital visits.  Local fishermen were amazed at the guy who would show up in a suit and tie and walk away a half hour later with his limit.

After 38 years of ministry, Henry and Rosemary retired to Fond du Lac, busying themselves with the making of ceramics and traveling.  Retirement didn’t last long.  In November of 1989, Henry agreed to serve as the visitation pastor at St. Peter’s Ev. Lutheran Church, Fond du Lac.  Even though he lost a leg to an aneurysm in 1993, he spent 14 years comforting the sick and elderly with God’s precious Word.  So it was his God-given grace to serve the Lord and people with a ministry spanning 52 years.

Left to mourn their loved one, but not without hope, are his children:  Timothy (Diane) Juroff, Rebecca Miller, Kathryn Juroff, all of Fond du Lac, and Cheryl (Gregg) Schoeneck of Oshkosh.  Also surviving are his nine grandchildren:  Joshua (Wendy) Miller, Amanda (Jason) Heitz, Andrew (Amber) Miller, Jesse (Skylar) Miller, Chris (Laura) Schoeneck, Adam (Kathleen) Schoeneck, Noah Schoeneck, Danielle (Jerry) Anderson, and Madeline (Steve) Maksim; and 13 great-grandchildren: Lily, Sage, Hope, Grace, Samantha, Sophia Miller, Charlotte and Sebastian Anderson, Corbin and Rose Heitz, Avery and Wilhelmina Schoeneck, and Evelynn Maksim.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his dear wife, Rosemary; his brothers: Leonard and Arthur; and twin premature daughters.

A Christian funeral will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, December 7, 2012, at St. Peter’s Ev. Lutheran Church, 1600 South Main Street, Fond du Lac, with Rev. Matthew Guse officiating.

The visitation will be from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 6, 2012, at Mach Funeral Chapel & Crematory, 31 E. Division Street, Fond du Lac, and on Friday at church from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service. The burial will be at 2:00 p.m. in St. Paul’s Ev. Lutheran Cemetery, Howards Grove.
