Richard “Dick” Thompson

Richard “Dick” Thompson, 89, of Sun Prairie, passed away Friday June 3, 2016.

He was born January 27, 1927, in Escanaba, MI, son of the late Neil and Helen Thompson. 

Dick was a graduate of Madison East High School. He served in the United State Army from 1945 to 1947 in WWII under the European Theatre. He received honorable discharge as Sargent, Frist Class. Under the GI Bill, he received a State Register in Heating and A.C. Designer and retired from Badger Metals. On May 7, 1954 he married the love of his life, Shirlee Ann Manowske. After Badger Metal, Dick continued with his Martial Arts where he held a rank of 8th degree in black belt. He competed in Judo traveling throughout the U.S. receiving 17 national awards. With his knowledge and black belt degree, Dick donated his time holding hundreds of seminars teaching Women’s Self Defense for over 40 years throughout the Madison area. He was also an avid hunter and fisherman. He never missed a season and enjoyed his time in the woods or on the lake. On October 8, 2011, he took part in the Badger Honor Flight. The opportunity to see the memorials that have been created in their honor was a very special moment in his life. 



He is survived by two sons, Neil (Patti) Thompson of Fond du Lac and Glen (Tracy) Thompson of Fond du Lac; grandchildren, Jonathon and Jennifer Thompson; also Tracy’s children Joe (Jenna) Ebling and Anna Marie Ebling; two great grandchildren Hailey and Celeb Ebling and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; and his lovely wife, Shirlee Thompson of almost 60 years of marriage. 



The visitation will be held from 1:00 – 3:00 pm on Saturday, June 18, 2016 at Uecker-Witt Funeral Home. A Celebration of Life will be held at 3:00 pm on Saturday, June 18, 2016 at Uecker-Witt Funeral Home. Military honors will be conducted by American Legion Post #270. Cremation has taken place.
