Steven Jerome Penning
Steven Jerome Penning, age 63, passed away on Wednesday, January 24, 2024, at his home in the Town of Stockbridge. He was born on February 23, 1960, in Chilton, Wisconsin, son of the late Harold “Mike” & Jean (Nachtwey) Penning.
Steve’s family moved to the Penning farm in Fond du Lac when he was age 10 but kept close ties with Chilton returning for work, play, and a family of his own.
He enjoyed working with his hands, auto mechanics and industrial maintenance. He made an impact in the community working as an EMT, at a local garage and organizations such as Kaytee, Paul Roehrig Trucking, Ottery, Ornua and Snap-on.
Steve was a landlord for 38 years. He also volunteered with the Chilton Fire Department for 25 years. He enjoyed learning about arson investigation and was assistant chief for 10 years.
Steve appreciated moments in the great outdoors camping in Algoma and Westward Ho. He was a member of the Quinney Fishing Club. He always looked forward to the deer hunting season and time spent with buddies on the lake ice fishing and sturgeon spearing. His final wish was that his funeral didn’t conflict with sturgeon spearing weekend! With this passion for nature and a bright vision for the future, Steve devoted time and resources to planting trees and native grasses to beautify the landscape.
Steven cherished his family. He was a great dad and extremely proud of his four grandchildren.
Survivors include his children: Elisa Penning (Eric Bahr) & Jacob (Chelsea) Penning; his grandchildren: Sullivan & August Bahr, Lucy & Bailey Penning; and his siblings: Nancy (Ron) Marose, Michael Penning & Terry (Wendy) Penning. He is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Steve was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Erica and brother Rick.
