Omro man who held police in 8-hour standoff found guilty of first degree intentional homicide in girlfriend’s death

An Omro man accused of killing his girlfriend and holding police in an eight hour standoff in March, pleaded no contest Tuesday to first-degree intentional homicide.
Joseph Olvera was charged with the homicide and first-degree recklessly endangering safety after a March 11th incident where a police SWAT team and negotiators spent roughly 8 hours at Olvera’s apartment in the 500 block of Spruce Street in Omro.
Around 4:00 a.m., Olvera exited the apartment with a gun while wearing body armor. After negotiations, Olvera dropped the handgun, took off the body armor, and was taken into custody.
The woman’s body was found inside the residence. An autopsy determined she died of smothering.
Olvera’s sentencing is scheduled for August 29.
