One dead and another injured, shot by police during pursuits

Law enforcement in Wisconsin and Illinois were involved in a series of incidents this weekend, involving a wanted man who ended up being fatally shot by police.

It all started Saturday morning when a a South Beloit Police Officer pulled over a vehicle for a traffic infraction. It was discovered that a male passenger in the vehicle had two warrants out for his arrest. Assisting officers arrived and the man was asked to exit the vehicle but he refused.

As officers attempted to forcibly remove the man, a struggle occurred. The female driver of the vehicle accelerated away at high rate of speed with an officer still in the vehicle. A South Beloit Police Officer was also knocked down as the vehicle drove away.

With the driver refusing to stop, the officer inside the vehicle shot the female in the leg. The vehicle went through the center median and through oncoming lanes of IL Highway 251 before resting in a ditch on the other side of the highway.

The man fled the vehicle on foot and entered a South Beloit bar where he accosted a man at knifepoint and stole his car.

Authorities in Beloit located the vehicle and attempted to stop it but the driver refused to stop. Officers performed a “pit maneuver,” causing the vehicle to spin out. The man then rammed a Roscoe Officers squad car in the driver-side door. The Roscoe Officer fired his weapon, striking the man.

The man was taken to a local hospital where he later died. The female was taken to a Rockford hospital and remains in stable condition.

Wisconsin’s Department of Justice, Division of Criminal Investigation is handling the officer involved death investigation in Beloit while the Winnebago Boone County Integrity Task Force will handle the initial shooting of the woman that happened in South Beloit.
