Oshkosh Police reports multiple thefts of Hyundai and Kia vehicles
The Oshkosh Police Department is currently investigating several auto thefts involving Hyundai and Kia vehicles.
Thefts of the two car companies cars has been a serious problem in larger cities since October of 2022 when a video surfaced on the social media platform Tik Tok, exploiting a flaw in the vehicles software, allowing them to be stolen in under a minute.
Years affected by this flaw are 2011 through 2021.
Oshkosh Police are encouraging owners to park vehicles in well-lit areas, in areas under video surveillance or in locked garages when possible.
Most vehicles in the years mentioned are eligible for a recall that fixes the problem.
Owners of Hyundai and Kia vehicles can contact dealers to see if they are covered by the recall.
Fond du Lac has had at least one auto theft related to the flaw. In that case, the person who stole the vehicle was driving recklessly and drew the attention of a police officer.
After a brief chase, the person pulled over and admitted to just stealing the vehicle.
