Oshkosh School District Does “Precautionary Cleaning” at Two Schools over Coronavirus Concerns

Staff in the Oshkosh School District spent the night cleaning two of their school facilities after a student and an after-school teacher may have come into contact with one of the people who has a confirmed case of Coronavirus from Fond du Lac County.

School District Officials said in a letter sent to parents that a student at Merrill Middle School may have been in secondary contact with one of the Fond du Lac County patients. That student was not at school on Thursday, and was not in direct contact with the infected person. The district says the student does not have any symptoms at this time. As a precaution, staff performed a deep cleaning of the school overnight so as to protect students and staff in school today.

A second letter sent to parents says an after-school teacher in the Webster Stanley Elementary School Lighted School House Program may also have been in secondary contact with one of the patients from Fond du Lac County. Just as with the student, the teacher was not in direct contact with the person and does not have any symptoms at this time. Similarly to Merrill Middle School, staff performed a deep cleaning of Webster Stanley Elementary and Middle School overnight as “a precautionary step.”

In both cases, the Winnebago County Health Department considers the threat to be “very low” to the school community, because the individual is not showing any signs of being sick. The Health Department is continuing to monitor each case.
