People refusing to heed warnings continue to get in trouble out on sketchy Lake Winnebago ice

For a third day in a row, emergency responders were called to an ice rescue out on the southern portion of Lake Winnebago. Monday night, February 3, 2025, just before 6 PM the Van Dyne Fire Department and Oshkosh Ambulance were called out to a report of a vehicle that broke through the ice east of the Point Comfort Road boat launch, a couple miles north of the Fond du Lac County line.
The initial call the driver made to dispatch stated he was still in the vehicle as it was taking on water, and then the call ended. A subsequent call from the man stated he had made it out of the vehicle which was now completely submerged, and he was on the near by ice.
This incident comes after multiple other calls for assistance over the weekend in which vehicles have either been stuck or sunk either in open water or broke through the ice out on the lake.
Police have named the two victims of a fatal incident on Saturday afternoon, when two men went into open water while they were on a 4 wheeler just north of the Fond du Lac Yacht Club.
67-year-old Clay Creighton of the Town of Taycheedah died as a result of the incident and 56-year-old Michael Huffman was transported to St Agnes Hospital where he was treated for hypothermic related symptoms.
