PHOTOS: KFIZ News Director chases rotating storm north of Madison

KFIZ News Director/Weatherman/Storm Chaser Doug Raflik went after a storm in northern Dane County on Wednesday, June 25, 2025. According to Raflik, a warm front was draped across that area and he knew if a storm would form, and then move along that front, it would have a good chance of spinning. A persistent rotating updraft is called a supercell, and rotate this storm did.

Raflik got on the storm near the Village of Waunakee in northern Dane County and tracked the storm east through Sun Prairie and the storm eventually died just north of Waterloo in extreme southwest Dodge County.

The storm never went severe warned, despite its rotation, which is usually a sign of an organized, severe storm.

Here is a gallery of photos Raflik took of the storm from under the updraft, to when it was dying.
