PHOTOS: Northern Lights Over Fond du Lac County

Mother Nature put on a light show in the skies north of Fond du Lac Thursday, March 23, 2023.

The aurora borealis, or northern lights, were most prevalent between the hours of 10PM and 11PM, and then again around 1AM.

The lights were mostly green, but some redish purple pillars shot out from time to time.

The auroras form when a solar flare on the earth facing side of the sun shoots gasses out into space, that when reaching the earth, interact with our atmosphere around the poles.

Keep in mind these photos are taken with a camera that allows extended shutter exposures, so this allows more light to “paint” on the photos. They do not look like this to the naked eye, though they are visible.
