Two Dead After Plane Crashes Near EAA

Authorities say two people are dead following a plane crash near EAA. It happened about 12:15 Monday afternoon in a farm field in the area of Old Knapp Road and Nekimi Avenue in the Town of Nekimi. This area is about two miles south of the EAA AirVenture grounds and was first reported by air traffic control in the Wittman Airport tower.

The Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office says upon arrival, responders discovered the plane was engulfed in fire. Names of those involved have not yet been released.

The plane was a Lancair ES 4 seater, single propeller plane which is considered a home built aircraft, shipped to buyers as a kit that they build.

According to flight history, the plane left from a New Jersey airport earlier in the day and stopped briefly at the Hartford Municipal Airport in Washington County before making it’s final leg to AirVenture where it crashed on approach just south of the airport. The cause of the crash remains under investigation by NTSB.

The City of Oshkosh Fire Department, Nekimi Fire Department and First Responders, Van Dyne Fire Department, and Wisconsin State Patrol also provided assistance.
