Protesters look to draw attention to prison conditions at Waupun Correctional

Protesters have again gathered outside the Waupun Correctional Institute on Sunday, June 9, 2024, in an attempt to draw attention to the facility, saying it should be shut down.

Multiple deaths have been reported in the last year and the prison has had significant movement restrictions placed on inmates recently, causing them to have to eat meals in
their cells, have limited recreational activity and not have visitors.

Waupun Correctional says the movement restrictions were put in place after a number of instances occurred targeting prison staff.

Opened in 1854, the prison holds about 1000 inmates but is said to have a maximum capacity of 882.

Protestors also were at the prison in March but have since come back after charges were brought against nine prison staff members last week related to the deaths of two inmates. The warden, who has since stepped down, was one of the nine charged.
