Reckless riding of e-bikes and scooters continues to be a problem in area

The dangerous use of electric bikes and scooters continues to be a problem in the area.

Recently Fond du Lac Police Chief Aaron Goldstein issued a statement saying the department has seen a noticeable increase in incidents involving e-bikes and e-scooters.

Goldstein said the department has responded to crashes involving young riders, complaints about reckless operation, and injuries that tend to be more severe because of the higher speeds these vehicles can reach.

Despite the outreach to the public, more incidents continue to come in as three significant crashes occurred in the area over the weekend.

In Fond du Lac on Friday, a teen was injured after being struck by a vehicle at the intersection of Brooke and Western Avenue.

On Saturday afternoon, a teen was killed in Sheboygan after being struck while on an e-bike, and also on Friday, a 4-year-old was injured in Menasha after being struck while riding an e bike.

Area law enforcement are saying as electric bike and scooter popularity continues to grow, that speed, inexperience, and misuse are leading to more crashes and complaints.

Goldstein says education is the goal, but they’re urging everyone to understand Wisconsin’s e-bike laws before riding.
