Scammers Posing as Alliant Energy Targeting FDL Area Customers
Scammers posing as Alliant Energy have been targeting
people in the Fond du Lac area. The Fond du Lac Police Department has been
looking into this scam, in which a person receives a letter claiming to be from
Alliant that says their electric bill is past due and their service is going to
be disconnected. The customer is then told to call a number listed on the
letter to get their bill worked out. Crime Prevention Officer Erik Foster says that
if you have received a letter like this in the mail, it’s important to verify
the information to make sure it’s legitimate. “If you’re ever concerned, or you’ve
gotten a letter from Alliant saying your electricity is going to be shut off,
or your past due – don’t call the number that’s on the piece of paper – look up
the number, and give them a call personally on the number you look up on your
own, not one provided on the letter, and then ask about your account.” Foster
tells us in this most recent case, the scammers have made the recording you
hear when you call the number back sound very legitimate, as if it were a number
actually ran by the company, which can add to the confusion for someone who may
be targeted by the scam.
