Scary looking clouds just before storms approach were normal thunderstorm clouds

KFIZ news director/staff meteorologist Doug Raflik had a several people send him photos of the “pouch” looking clouds that came before yesterday’s storms. FYI these are called mammatus clouds. While they themselves are not severe, they are often associated with severe weather. They form in the upper most part of the storm in the “anvil” and is caused by sinking air through the layer of clouds which causes the pouch appearance. And yes you are correct if you are connecting the similarity of mammatus and mammary. That’s why they are named that, because they can have the appearance of breasts.
