Sheriff Waldschmidt Warns of Scam

Sheriff Waldschmidt:

We have been notified by several residents that someone claiming to be “Deputy Morris” of the Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office is calling and telling people they have a warrant, and then requesting they pay the warrant through non-governmental services. THIS IS A SCAM. If you receive a call from the scammer, simply hang up. We are working to identify the scammer, but chances are this person is not even in the United States and will be difficult to identify.

We do not call people with warrants to notify them, we send deputies to locate them and take them into custody.

If you have sent money in this or a similar scam, notify local law enforcement as soon as possible so we can assist you in attempting to stop the payment and recover the money. Additionally, if you ever question the authenticity of a law enforcement officer who is calling you regarding an investigation or follow up, politely ask for their name and agency and tell them you would like to hang up and call the agency’s dispatch center to reconnect you with that officer to ensure it is a legitimate phone call.
