Shop with a Cop 2024 brings gifts to kids needing “extra dose of joy”

Shoppers at Walmart in Fond du Lac may have noticed a large police presence Thursday night, December 5, 2024, but it wasn’t for a crime in progress. Law enforcement from multiple jurisdictions got together for the annual shop with a cop event where dozens of kids get the opportunity to go on a mini shopping spree with donated funds.

Fond du Lac County Sheriff Ryan Waldschmidt explains kids are picked for the event by schools that see certain kids that may be going through some struggles and need an extra dose of joy in their life.

Though its called shop with a cop, kids can get paired up with anyone in the criminal justice system such as the District Attorneys Office, Probation and Parole, The DNR or Department of Corrections. Law enforcement from all jurisdictions in Fond du Lac County also are on hand to participate.

Waldschmidt said while most kids may get toys, that isn’t always what they go for. “Sometimes if they need shampoo, new towels or bedding they will pick out those essential items. It’s not always about games and toys.”
