Shop with a cop returns to Fond du Lac

The annual Shop with a Cop event took place last night, Thursday, December 7, 2023, in Fond du Lac.

About 70 kids were able to be paired up with an official involved in public safety in Fond du Lac County to do some pre Christmas shopping at the Walmart located on Rolling Meadows Drive.

Fond du Lac County Sheriff Ryan Waldschmidt explains kids are picked for the event by schools that see certain kids that may be going through some struggles and need an extra dose of joy in their life.

Though its called shop with a cop, kids can get paired up with anyone in the criminal justice system such as the District Attorneys Office, Probation and Parole, The DNR or Department of Corrections. Law enforcement from all jurisdictions in Fond du Lac County also are on hand to participate.

Waldschmidt says this year, donors contributed $34,000 to the event and while most kids may get toys, he says that isn’t always what they go for.

“Sometimes if they need some shampoo, new towels or bedding they will pick out those essential items. It’s not always about games and toys for the kids.”
