Sloppy, wet, windy and cold storm system to pass over area

A strong storm system moves into the area today, Wednesday, March 19, 2025, giving us a wet, blustery, and miserable day to be outside.
Rain will be moving in this morning and with the wind shifting to out of the northwest, the rain will change to snow this afternoon.
We could see just enough instability to get some rumbles of thunder with the initial rain, and maybe even a severe threat to the south and southwest, while an even better chance of severe storms, including a few tornadoes are possible down into Illinois.
Its a little hard to give snowfall amounts as it’s unclear just how early the rain will turn to snow, and also how much snow will stick before melting, but 1-2 inches is not out of the question.
Strong winds this evening will lead to blowing and drifting snow tonight, impacting travel. A Wind Advisory will go into effect at 7PM Wednesday and extend until 7 AM Thursday morning.
As always, we don’t have a crystal ball to see exactly what is going to happen, and any minor shift in the storms track can have major impacts to the outcome of precipitation amounts. Even the latest model run Wednesday morning had the center of the low moving a little south, which increases our snowfall. A farther drop south would give us more snow while a shift back north would decrease our totals.
As the storm passes to our east Thursday, things stay cool, but we do get some sunshine. Highs will struggle to get to the 40 degree mark however.
