SNOW? In May? Is This Normal

With snow forecasted for much of the area, some Wisconsinites might be thinking snow in May is an anomaly, but it’s far from it. The average last freeze in our area ranges from May 1-15 so any precipitation falling during freezing or near freezing temperatures will likely fall as snow.

Todays snow, and and associated cold temperatures is brought to us thanks to a large weather system now centered over the upstate New York area, wrapping colder air down to our area from Canada. Most of the snow that does fall will likely only stick to grassy areas and will be slushy.

Since 1887, Green Bay has recorded measurable snow fall in May 22 times.

A late season snowstorm in 1947 on May 28-29 brought as much as 8 inches of snow in Waushara County and 2-4 inches in the Fond du Lac area.
