Alvarez: Rose Bowl One Game Return

Wisconsin Athletic Director Barry Alvarez says that his return to coaching will be a one game stint.  The Hall of Fame coach agreed to coach the Badgers in the Rose Bowl after team captains asked him to shortly after Bret Bielema bolted to Arkansas.  Alvarez told the media that he will be a game manager and the assistant coaches will do the game planning and pregame prep for Stanford on January 1st

Not So Smooth Exit

Bret Bielema’s exit from the University of Wisconsin seems not to be on good terms.  Barry Alvarez says that the first he learned of Bielema’s leaving UW was when he actually resigned on Tuesday.  Alvarez says its common courtesy for schools to ask permission to talk to a coach under contract but Arkansas did not do that.  Alvarez said the he once thought of Bielema like a son.  When asked by a national radio show why he left the Big Ten for the SEC, he said “ My father told me its better to play in excellence than excel in mediocrity. “  He also said he had a better chance to win a national title at Arkansas than at UW which irked the AD and some players.

Chryst Not A Candidate

Badger AD Barry Alvarez says that the search for a new head coach has already begun and he will be looking for a person who already had head coaching experience.  Many considered former UW assistant and current Pitt head coach Paul Chryst as the front-runner for the job, but Alvarez said he is not a candidate because it wouldn’t be right to hire him back after working hard to get him the job a year ago.

Ball Wins Doak Walker

Badger running back Montee Ball won the Doak Walker Award given to the nation’s top running back.  Ball set the NCAA career TD mark this season.  In 2012 he ran for 1730 yards and 21 TDs

T’eo Is Top Player

Notre Dame LB Manti T’eo won the Maxwell Award as college football’s top player and also the Bednarik Award as the top defensive player.  Texas A&M QB Johnny Manziel won the O’Brien award as the top QB.  Both are finalists along with Kansas State’s Collin Klein for the Heisman Trophy which will be awarded on Saturday night.
