We stay on the cross country course for our Hierl Insurance High School team of the Week this week. The St. Mary’s Springs girls cross country team qualified for state by finishing in second place at Saturday’s WIAA Division 3 sectional meet in Manitowoc, The Ledgers finished with 97 points with Emily McGovern pacing the Ledgers by taking sixth place individually. Lizzie Guerrin finished 11th and Morgan Krupp placed 13th. The State Cross Country Meet is Saturday in Wisconsin Rapids.
In Packers news, Cornerback Damarious Randall had surgery to repair a groin injury over the weekend, according to league sources. Typical recovery time for the surgery is four to six weeks, which could put the cornerback back on track to return in early December. Also on Monday the team placed Safety Chris Banjo and Wide Receiver Jared Abbrederis on Injured Reserve. Banjo was dealing with a hamstring injury, while Abbrederis suffered a thigh contusion that kept him out of last Thursday’s game against the Bears. To fill the roster spots, the team promoted receiver Geronimo Allison and safety Jermaine Whitehead from the Practice Squad.
The Packers return to practice today to begin their preparations to face Atlanta on Sunday afternoon. Pregame coverage on Sunday begins at 1pm, kickoff at 3:25, hear the game on KFIZ.
On Monday Night Football, Denver defeated Houston 27-9.
The Badgers Football team will be without linebacker Jack Cichy for the rest of the season. The team announced Monday that Cichy will miss the rest of the season with a torn pectoral muscle that he suffered late in the first half of the team’s 17-9 win over Iowa on Saturday. Cichy was named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week for his 15 tackle performance against Ohio State and had totaled 60 tackles through seven games. Cichy tallied 10 tackles against Iowa. It appears redshirt sophomore Ryan Connelly will take Cichy’s spot.
Jon Lester will get the start for the Cubs in Game 1 of the World Series against Cleveland tonight. The 32-year-old lefty is 2-0 in three starts during this postseason, with wins over the Giants and Dodgers in the NL playoffs. He was 19-5 during the regular season. Lester is 3-0 in three starts in the World Series with a sparkling 0.43 ERA. Cleveland is going with former Cy Young award winner Corey Kluber. Cubs manager Joe Maddon says Lester is “really, really in the moment” right now. First pitch tonight is just after 7 in Cleveland.
The NBA regular season begins tonight. The defending champion Cleveland Cavaliers will be honored tonight before their game against the New York Knicks. Also, defending Western Conference champion and finals runner up Golden State opens at home against San Antonio. The Bucks open their season at home Wednesday against the Charlotte Hornets.
