Ball: Doak Walker Finalist
For the 2nd straight year, Badgers running back Montee Ball is a finalist for the Doak Walker Award, given annually to college football’s top running back. On Saturday, Ball tied Travis Prentice for the all-time lead in career touchdowns with 78 and is poised to break the record this weekend at Penn State. Ball joins Oregon’s Kenjon Barner and UCLA’s Jonathan Franklin as finalists this year. He is the third Badger to be named a Doak Walker Award finalist, joining Ron Dayne and John Clay. Dayne, the only other Badger to be a finalist twice, won the award in 1999.
Maryland Joins The Big Ten…Rutgers Expected To Follow
The University of Maryland has accepted an invitation to join the Big Ten Conference on July 1st, 2014 as the league’s 13th member. Maryland will have to pay a $50 million dollar exit fee to the ACC to leave. The Terps all-time record for Big Ten schools in football is 4-44-1. Rutgers is expected to bolt the Big East to become the 14th member of the league. Both Maryland and Rutgers are expected to join Wisconsin, Purdue, Indiana, Ohio State and Penn State in the Leaders Division for football. Illinois will shift to the Legends Division with Michigan, Michigan State, Nebraska, Northwestern, Iowa, and Minnesota.
More Conference Shifts
The latest conference moves have a few schools looking to go back to their roots. Boise State and San Diego State recently joined the Big East as football only members and BYU went independent, but with the Big East crumbling and a recent ruling by the BCS that the top ranked school from non-BCS leagues may get an automatic invite, has those schools in talks to return to the Mountain West Conference.
