Sturgeon spearing numbers remain low with season nearing the end

As the sturgeon spearing season nears it’s closing date Sunday, here are some updated sturgeon spearing numbers.

Low harvest numbers continue, as they have all season so far. On Tuesday, February 18, 2025, only 20 fish were speared. 14 on Lake Winnebago and six on the up river lakes. Of those, one weighed in at over 100 pounds.

Wednesday, 36 fish were speared. 31 on Winnebago and five on the up river lakes. Four sturgeon over 100 pounds were speared. Three on Winnebago and one on the up river lakes.

Upriver caps are close to being met with less than two dozen to go to meet the 90% trigger on juvenile females and males, while Lake Winnebago isn’t even close on any of the three categories.

The Pipe, North Winnebago and Winneconne registration stations were closed Wednesday and will remain closed Thursday.

The season total taken as of Wednesday, February 19, 2025 is 720 fish. Only 1/3rd of the total number available to be speared.
